Rabbet
A step or recess cut on the edge of the wood, such as the rabbets cut on the edges of the stiles and the rails, into which the infill timber is nailed.

Slats
In the context of farm and held gates, the lesser vertical members between the stiles. In some parts of England, the slats arc known as sloates or muntins. In small paneled gate, the sma11 open vertical members are called mullions

Slam stile
Another name for the latch or head stile; also called the clapping stile. It is the stile that slams against the locking post.

Stump latch
A small stump set low in the ground, used to hold the gate open. The gate is swung open so that the toe or some part of the bottom rail locates in the latch. To release the gate, you simply put your foot down on the hooked end. The good thing about such an arrangement is that it can he operated without bending down.
