Setting The Unit of Wood Doors

Measure the height of the wood door unit to make sure it will fit, trimming off the horns above the head jamb with a handsaw, if necessary. Remove the packing nail or screw that holds the door against the strike-side jamb during shipping. Once the door is set, it will be impossible to remove. If a clip holds the door to the strike-side jamb, you may be able to remove it after setting the unit, which makes handling the unit a little easier.

Shims are located where the hinges will be. In this case, a single tapered shim was used instead of opposing shims because the stud was twisted.

The face of the wall is checked with a level on both sides of the opening. When a jamb is set plumb in an out-of-plumb wall, the jamb and the wall won't be entirely flush. A square is used to detect a twisted stud. A twisted stud can cause a distorted jamb unless its corrected with shims.
