Friday, June 15, 2007Setting The Unit of Wood Doors Measure the height of the wood door unit to make sure it will fit, trimming off the horns above the head jamb with a handsaw, if necessary. Remove the packing nail or screw that holds the door against the strike-side jamb during shipping. Once the door is set, it will be impossible to remove. If a clip holds the door to the strike-side jamb, you may be able to remove it after setting the unit, which makes handling the unit a little easier.Shims are located where the hinges will be. In this case, a single tapered shim was used instead of opposing shims because the stud was twisted. The face of the wall is checked with a level on both sides of the opening. When a jamb is set plumb in an out-of-plumb wall, the jamb and the wall won't be entirely flush. A square is used to detect a twisted stud. A twisted stud can cause a distorted jamb unless its corrected with shims.
