This type works best a few inches above the floor where there's sure to be framing nails at every stud. In the middle of a wall, a magnetic stud finder may pick up the presence of drywall nails, but the process is hit or miss. In recent years, a new generation of high-tech stud finders has appeared. They use electronic sensors to find wood as well as metal. The readout is by LED and/or an audible signal. Some models also have warning devices that indicate the presence of hot electrical wires.
