Assembling and installing the jamb

Trim your jambs to the correct length and assemble them as a three-sided frame on the floor. To hide the bifold track, nail a 132 valance (wooden cover piece) to the head jamb. The edge of the valance should be flush with the front of the opening. Install casing while the frame is still on the floor.

Of course, you'll be nailing only into the jambs for now; the outer edge of the casing will be nailed to the wall later. Cover the valance with casing as if it were the head jamb. Then stand the frame up and slip it into the opening. After centering it, drive two nails through the casing to hold the frame in place. Place the nails close to the corners of the frame, because you haven't checked the jambs yet for straightness.

A leg casing is applied to the unit while it's still on the floor. The head casing will be installed next, thereby concealing both the head jamb and the valance. To plumb the second leg, a measurement is pulled from the first leg. The width of the finished opening must be equal at the top and the bottom. To plumb the first leg, a nail is driven through the casing near the floor. The carpenter reads his level while nailing.
